Question by Beer is food: What currency is best to buy as a hedge against a possible US dollar devaluation?
The US public debt is rapidly increasing and will soon put pressure on the US dollar. However the financial crisis is affecting the whole world. Which currency will be the new safe haven when the US dollar collapses?

Best answer:

Answer by Barati
I personally hold physical Canadian currency. There are several reasons for this. The local banks carry it. It is the only currency they will accept because we border Canada (I live in Alaska). During a currency devaluation and economic crisses Alaska is more likely to trade and recieve goods from Canada because they are a producing nation. Alaska is not connected to the US. You must come through Canada so it is wise to hold their currency for travel expenses. Also the US dollar will decline and buying Canadian currency now would be a good hedge for buying Canadian goods in the future. They have gold mining companies. 99% of mining companies are Canadian and listed on the TSX. Canada would be one of only a few countries that could back their currency by gold or silver in the future with ease because of their mining production capacity.

I currently hold 10% of my liquid cash reserves in Canadian currency to hedge against the US dollar. It is a good idea to do so. Banks in the Lower 48 may stock and trade other currency as well but here in Alaska the Canadian dollar is the only one they accept so I hold it. All other currencies. Canada is better positioned but they too are inflating their currency as well.

Last week I found a penny from 1947! I know, quite a catch. I polished it and will save it for my children and grandchildren, perhaps it will be worth something more than a penny some day. I also found a dollar bill from 1995 recently. I think that’s even more remarkable than the 1947 penny. So what’s the oldest coin currency circulating in the US, in your opinion? I want to go to the 2014 world cup in brazil. but how would my usa currency work in brazil? do i pay american dollars to stay in a brazilian hotel, or do i swith to brazilian dollars? or if i am to attend a game, what currency do i pay with? how does all that work during a world cup in another country?

Answer by Midna (Maria Mller)
i’m sure that when you pay for your hotel reservation and planet tickets they’ll accept dollars. as far as expenses go, you should bring a good amount of US dollars and change them there to reals to use for things such as snacks, drinks and souvenirs.

Question by ethslan: What alternative currency is more widely accepted in China?
Okay, I know that the Chinese currency is the RMB & the Yuan. But when travelling to China is US currency or the English Pound easily accepted.

Between the US dollar, the pound & the euro, which is the more accepted in China?

(And in case different parts of China have different preferences, I am focussing mainly on Beijing & Wuhan.)
I do not live in the US, but in my country as well as most countries, major foreign currencies are accepted in order to boost tourism.

Best answer:

Answer by BSherman
The only currency accepted in China is the Chinese yuan. You will need to convert your foreign currency into Chinese yuan if you wish to buy anything here.

There are no “alternative” currencies in China. Why would there be? Do stores in the U.S. accept euros or yen? Of course not, so why would you ever think it is any different in China?
