Q: I was trying to find Stock Charts. But, I have no progress. I am really asking You to help me, please, if You can. I also really would need the help of finding good certain news for stocks…so I can know where the stock will explode before the news. I have traded Forex, and nothing is working. My friend told me to try Stocks, and I really want to try them. So, I would really, really appreciate it if someone would please help me find good stock charts, and tell me where I can get News for stocks..

A: Wall Street Journal online (wsj.com) has a free market data center. Finance.yahoo.com is good too. The best is Bloomberg.com. They are the leader in financial data, if can afford them.. Standard and Poors is also a good source.
The bad news is that the market is very efficient and news is rapidly assimilated into the stock prices so the chance that you will find something out in time to make a profit from it is slim to none, unless you are using inside information which is very illegal. Google the “efficient market hypothesis”.
Forex is not for ameteurs, nor is any type of investing. If you know that the equity market is suitable for you try and start out with index-linked ETFs or an s&p500 linked mutual fund

Q: I am losing all my hard earned savings! This is how my portfolio is structured:
30% in cash. Interest rate (2%) is much lower than inflation and my savings are steadily deteriorating every month… Add to it dollar’s steady collapse and you have loss of 2% value every month.
10% in Icelandic currency that yields 15%. Perhaps the interest rate is higher than inflation but in the last two weeks alone that currency lost 20% to dollar…
15% in stocks. Everyone knows what happened… I invested in a index fund which is now down 10% in dollar terms (20% real terms). People around say stocks are still over-valued…
5% in gold through a forex broker – the volatility is so high that my deposit got wiped out twice already even though gold is going up long term…. It is now very expensive, should I hold onto that?
40% in property. Property was purchased a year ago out right so no mortgage, but it’s value is dropping since then in $ terms and in real terms even more…WHAT TO DO?

A: The global economy is currently in a downward spiral so that is why it is hard not to lose money. When the market is like this you have to due diligence or patience. Either just sit and ride out the market until the next upswing or really go after the few cookies there are. I have pulled out all my investments except my 401k, (that would be stupid) and am looking at buying some bottom feeding real estate and renting. I am buying a brand new house 1800 sq ft. house in a growing area for 60K. When the market starts returning I will sell and hopefully have some equity. Wish I had better news for you.

Q: I got some money (about $4k) and I want to invest them. Currently I keep them in a local bank and get about a 5 percent year interest rate. The inflation in my country is about 10 percent and growing, so now I’m loosing. There’re some banks which can give me about 12 percent for long-term deposits but it doesn’t work for me either. So now I’m looking for other ways to make my cash work for me.I wonder: can I do it with a help of some US (EU or UK) broker? I’d like to give my bucks to some mutual fund or try a forex trading. I got a visa card and can create a PayPal account if required.Another question: would I have to pay my income taxes and where (in Russia or in the US)?

A: Living in Russia does not disqualify you from opening a broker account abroad. There are a few countries like Burma, Nigeria, Iran and Syria where you would not be allowed to open an account abroad because the governments have not signed up to international treaties on issues like money laundering. However Russia is fine, all that will happen is that you will be asked for ID to prove who you are and where you live.
The only issue I can think of is whether Russia has any foreign exchange controls in place. You should be able to check this with a bank if you don’t know but you should find out before you deposit any money. Technically paying money in a US broker account would be taking money outside Russia. It may therefore be a problem under Russian law.
You shouldn’t need a Visa card or Paypal account. What you invest in is (obviously) up to you, but Forex trading sounds like a quick way to lose a lot of money quickly. Particularly if you’re new to investing. A mutual fund (or OEIC fund in Europe) sounds like the smart option.
The tax you pay will depend on the tax treaty between Russia and the country that hosts your broker account. To give you an example, I am a UK citizen with an account with TD Ameritrade in the US. They withold part of my dividend payments for US tax authorities and I am also liable for some taxes in the UK. You are likely to be in a similar position.

Q: I would appreciate any advice on finding a brokerage firm that offers trading in MANY DIFFERENT markets ie.(Forex, Futures, Indexes, Stocks). I have looked online and could’nt find any. Does anyone know of one?

A: Yes, the full service firms like UBS, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Smith Barney. They all can invest in all of those, except most just hold a managed futures license(can only offer a pool of funds for the futures market). But usually, there are at least two financial advisors in those offices that can offer individual futures contracts.
At those firms, you will be charged a commission, priced as a percentage of trades and price, can’t be below 10dollars for the commission and most of those financial advisors don’t get paid on commissions below 50 dollars per trade. If you want to trade alot, you can have a percentage based portfolio with unlimited trades(except day traders) and that is around 1% for the portfolio. Of course, you can then write off 85% of that fee(%based portfolio) at the end of the year on your tax’s.
So to conclude, the full service firms will offer that for you, but it might be more expensive than if you found a place online that does it. But atleast I know for sure they offer these services.
FYI-some financial advisors may not want to take that type of risky business, so my advice if going to a full service firm, call them on the phone and ask for the Branch Manager to suggest somebody in the office with the skill/licensing/ and experience to help you. And interview a couple till you feel comfortable.
